Bangalore City

Bangalore, also known as Bengaluru, is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Bangalore is nicknamed as the “Garden City”, “Pub City”,”Silicon Valley of India” and the “Electronic Capital of India”. Located in the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka in the southern part of India, Bangalore was once the pensioner’s paradise and is now India’s third most populous city and fifth most populous urban agglomeration.

A demographically diverse city, Bangalore is a major economic and cultural hub and the fastest growing major metropolis in India. Home to the country’s most well-recognised colleges and research institutions, Bangalore is also the hub of numerous public sector heavy industries and software companies, apart from several aerospace, telecommunications and defence organizations.

Bangalore is known for its salubrious climate due to its high elevation, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius through most of the year. Whenever the mercury rises to 30 degrees or higher, rain showers are quick to follow, immediately cooling down the city again. Bangalore is now most famous for its numerous IT Parks, including the Electronic City in the southern corner of the city, International Technology Park Bangalore (ITPB) in Whitefield and the Software Technologies Parks of India (STPI). UB City, the headquarters of the United Breweries Group, is the city’s high-end commercial zone.

The Electronic City, where Svenska Bangalore is located, is also the home and headquarters of two of India,s largest and most successful IT companies, Infosys and Wipro, apart from several global SEI-CMM Level 5 companies. It is also emerging as a major hub for electronic component manufacturers as well as bio-technology, including Biocon, India’s largest bio-tech company.

Bangalore is served by the Bengaluru International Airport (BIAL) in Devanahalli, the northern part, and the city is getting a new rapid transit system of over 40 k.m. of elevated and underground rail network. Like other major Indian cities, Bangalore also has a network of black-and-yellow cabs and auto-rickshaws, apart from various private taxi operators.

The key tourist attractions in the city include:

  • UB City, including mall, entertainment centre, restaurants and bars
  • Glass house at Lalbaugh
  • Shiva Statue
  • Bangalore Palace
  • Various lakes, including Ulsoor and Hesarghatta
  • Various clubs (Bangalore Club, Golf Club, etc.) and pubs at MG Road and nearby
